![]() Nashville, Tennessee Those who know me in real life might get a kick out of this picture because they know I'm not a 'real' beer drinker. But it seemed appropriate to kick off the week. This is the 3rd year that I've made a fall trip to explore the countryside with Mark Pennington. Generally, the pattern is to pick an area or a state, do a little research in things to see and places to eat, take the cameras, and head out the door. It might not be the same as a vacation to the beach, but it's a great way to spend a few days meeting folks, learn some history, and get to know things that aren't that far from home. During our 2003 trip, we searched out the odd things in Virginia and was quite happy to have found small towns and interesting people. We had a fine burger at the Mills Creek Cafe in Goshen, Virginia where a nice waitress named Jackie told us the town was 'so small that everybody knows what you do before you do it.' We visited with Mr. Jefferson at Monticello and his 2nd home at Poplar Forest, which I find to be just as interesting. We visited with Pudden Updike at the WWII memorial at Bedford, Virginia where he guided us around and told us about crossing the English Channel and being 'so hungry that I saw a mirage of bacon and eggs....'. We spoke about wine making with a Bulgarian named Svet at Rebec Winery where we tasted his Sweet Sofia, a spicy wine from his native town. All the pictures from the 2003 trip are on film and I'll post them someday with the journal entries. In 2004, we traveled through Kentucky and stopped at The Abbey of Gethsemani before staying at the Wigwam motel. We ended up in Nashville where I caught a good picture of a a window cleaner. It was a great city to visit and we wished we had more than just a few days. So, this year we decided to spend all of our days in one city- in Nashville. We had a great time, saw some nice places, ate some great food, and listened to some good traditional country music. I'll post a few pictures this week, along with some write-ups on the restaurants we visited. Have a nice week. Comment (3) | Permalink |
