Ashland, Kentucky

I've had this one for a few months and I've gone back to it a few times. At first, I thought it was a black & white picture, but then I decided that the color was necessary. In fact, after doing the basic adjustments of curves and such, I decided to give it that saturated look that I learned from one of Dave's pictures on Chromasia. You duplicate the layer, apply Gaussian blur to it (about 15, I believe- a pretty good amount of blur), then set the layer blend to 'overlay'. You can then scale back the opacity to get a more muted effect if you want. I love the effect, but you have to wisely pick the subject, in my opinion, and then not use it too often. Hope this helps somebody.

Update: I found a nice tutorial on another overlay technique at the Daily Shooter, which is a new site devoted to photoblogs and is very interesting to browse. You can find the page at Add a little pop.
