Ho, ho ho! Merry Christmas

Store display on Winchester Avenue
Ashland, Kentucky

Hope this morning finds you and your family in good health and enjoying the day.

You probably know by now that I'm a fan of The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor. You can read it on the web or have a daily email each night. The Almanac includes a poem-a-day, but probably more enjoyable is some history about writers and important historical things that happened on that day. It's written in a cozy, read-by-the-fire style.

Today, the Almanac shares with us the history of Christmas. Prior to the 4th century AD, Christians believed the only holiday to celebrate was Easter. I still know some folks that practice this and they make a very strong argument why they are right about it. I won't argue the point, as it's a great day to celebrate family even if your religious views differ. It seems the holiday was chosen to fall at the end of the year in order to combat pagan holidays that included drunken revelry. Doesn't seem too effective on this point, IMHO.

No matter where you are or what your religion is (or even if you have one), I hope you enjoy the day with company from family and/or friends.
