If you're a fan of urban decay, then you might enjoy this picture of farm-decay. I found this scene on the side of an old barn that lies in the bottom-land of W-Hollow. You might be wondering how W-Hollow got it's name, just take a look at the view from space and if you use your imagination a bit- you'll understand. Keep in mind, they didn't have satellites back then, so the old guys did a pretty accurate job with the name.

This picture reminded me of some family history stories of when my folks finally were able to get modern-day utilities around here. On my Grandfather's farm, the family was raised with gas lights powered by a network of natural gas pipes located in the attic of the house. The kids thought they had it made because the country cousins lived with dim, sooty, oil lamps. But finally electric wires came and the 'standard' installation included wiring to every room for one receptacle and one bare-bulb in the center of the room with a pull chain. Sounds primitive, but consider what changes occurred almost overnight in their home.

I have this vision of my grandparents standing in their living room with a crowd of folks, while Grandma grins and says 'Turn it off and on for 'em, Joe...'

Time changes quickly, it pays to write your story down.
