![]() Greenbo Lake State Resort Park Greenup County, Kentucky Today I hiked to the old abandoned farm that I first visited over 30 years ago. Each year, the trails are more used and the old building looks just a bit more tired. It sits in the back road-less part of the park that amounts to about 2,000 acres. Because of being so remote, I'm always surprised when I get to the point that I can see it is still standing. I first discovered this house way back before I could drive a car. My father was given a topo map of this section of the county and I noticed that the park had black and white squares listed on it. A few friends came with me and we made what I remember as a very briary hike back to the house. We walked the creek bed much of the way as there were no trails and very little sign of other visitors. Back then, the interior walls were covered with old newspapers from the 1920s as a means of insulation. Many of the early trips were taken up by just standing in the house and reading the walls. Now, most of the newspapers are gone as are a lot of the floorboards. For this trip, I decided to photograph some of the remaining pieces- an example is above. It's a very enjoyable hike during nice days of the winter. I have a few more pictures from my 2005 visit HERE. Comment (11) | Permalink |
