Russell Track

Russell, Kentucky

It hit me down around Louisville. I can't say I felt any pain, the only thing I clearly remember is laying there waiting for the surgery to begin. I feel fine, I thought to myself, but I'll surely wake up in lots of pain after they spread my chest for the operation.

I might die, I better pray. Can I stand the pain? It'll be terrible. Then I used reason and convinced myself that after a little fentanyl, I'll just fade away and in a snap of a finger I'll be waking up again. It'll quickly be over with- good or bad. That's how surgeries go.

And that's the way it was. In a blink, I was waking up. Gee...no pain, but my face is covered with a sheet. Am I breathing....yes, I believe I am. Boy, this is nice- better than expected. I'll just lay here and keep my chest motionless. The pain will be terrible when I finally have to move, so just lie here. Keep the chest very still, don't move until someone makes you. Where's the nurse? I'll wait a few minutes. Nobody's coming....

My head clears and I'm finally wide awake. Hmmm.... After a few more minutes of waiting, I got out of bed and fixed coffee. I drank the whole pot while pondering on the meaning of it all. There's only one thing to do about it, go to the track and begin the workouts again before it's too late.

That's the story of the dream that led to today's picture.
