![]() Ashland, Kentucky This scene was shot while crossing the Ben Williamson Memorial Bridge that leads from Ohio into Ashland, Kentucky, basically the same spot as this photograph that I took in December 2004. Last weekend, the television was playing an old 1960s western movie called The Way West. The movie is one of those epic westerns where a wagon train crosses the country and faces all types of adversities. I wasn't paying too close attention until the part where they had to lower each piece of the wagon train over a sheer cliff with ropes. When it came time to lower a woman in a basket, the man says 'we haven't had this much fun since the county fair in Ashland...' and the woman grins and says, '..and that was back in Kentucky.' Now, how did the small town of Ashland, Kentucky get into a Hollywood western in the 1960s? According to Wikipedia, the movie was based on a novel written by A.B. Guthrie, Jr who worked for over 20 years as a news reporter and editor for the Lexington Leader in Lexington, Kentucky (about 100 miles away). Evidently, Guthrie must have had a good time at a county fair during his stay. Comment (1) | Permalink |
