4x6photo.com | Photographer's Choice: 3rd runner up, Old Capitol Steps | 22 June, 2005

The 3rd runner up in Mark's choice of the first year. Although not being one my all time favorites, this image wears on you really well. This is the twin spiral stairs in the old capitol at Frankfort, Kentucky taken during an annual fall get-away trip with a friend. We ramble around looking at common and not-so-common things.

This shot reminds me of the face-to-face comment that someone gave me after looking at some of my pictures: "Yes...that's an awesome camera...". I have since noticed that a lot of photographers give most of the byline credit of their shots to their camera make and model. In a conversation with another photoblogger, we discussed that painters never, never, never sit around while looking at a picture and discuss the brand of brush that they use.

But this shot was made with a tiny Canon S410 digicam, a camera that I'd have to admit that I like better than my DSLR.

One viewer told me that this picture reminded her that some things shine and get better in age, like an 80 year old woman that still makes herself up like a 30-something. "Dignified". It has also reminded some of their past, places where their feet have been. Hope and sadness.

(Note: The end of the first year for 4x6 is nearing. I've posted over 300 pictures, which even surprises me. Many thanks for all the encouragement, advice, arguments, and comments. I'll be posting some of my favorite shots, along with comments, from now until July 8th, which is the one year mark. I've selected 3 runners-up and the top 10. Feel free to tell me what the picture makes you feel, good or bad. That's what it's all about. )
