4x6photo.com | Top Ten Shots: #5, Hat in hand | 04 July, 2005

My 5th pick of the top ten is Hat in hands (it was untitled, but that's what it usually gets called when we're talking about it face to face). To tell you the truth, this is one of my most favorite pictures. It isn't the picture itself that is good, I realize, it is the memories that it pulls from my mind. Like the scent of a good Thanksgiving dinner being cooked, it isn't always the picture itself that makes it good. It's the memories within you.

The picture didn't get many comments and that's OK. I have spoken to others who relay stories about their father or grandfather and how this picture reminded them of their loved ones. It only takes one of those to make a picture successful.

The picture was a "shot from the knee", while a touching story was being told. Nice big loud cameras are great, but sometimes smaller silent ones portray the moment better.

(Note: The end of the first year for 4x6 is nearing. I've posted over 300 pictures, which even surprises me. Many thanks for all the encouragement, advice, arguments, and comments. I'll be posting some of my favorite shots, along with comments, from now until July 8th, which is the one year mark. I've selected 3 runners-up and the top 10. Feel free to tell me what the picture makes you feel, good or bad. That's what it's all about. )
