Today is the beginning of the 10th year for this photoblog, I can't believe how fast time has gone by.  I think this will be the last year so I'll put some extra effort into posting regularly. The above shot is a hearth cricket that is on the porch since we no longer have a hearth.  The old tale is a cricket on your hearth will bring good fortune to your family.  The first time I heard this was during a gift of a cricket exactly 30 years ago this year.  It stood guard for many years while the fortune never appeared and then I suppose my uncle must have thought we needed a bit more mojo in our cricket as he made us a large one out of a railroad spike.  All of these cricket gift-givers have passed away and so I think the moral of the story is that it's better to receive a cricket than to give one away.
